Meet the Experts
:: Cutting Edge Science for Teachers

Science in the Bush invites you to 'Meet the Experts' a chance for science teachers (and others!) to hear about the cutting edge science that is taking place in their communities.

The first presentations will focus on world leading research being undertaken at Charles Sturt University in School of Community Health and the School of Veterinary and Animal Science:

Rod is currently the Director of the Centre for Inland Health, at Charles Sturt University (CSU), and a consultant to the Australian Department of Defence on prevention of non-combat injuries in military personnel. Some years ago, he was a student at a Wagga high school, intrigued and inspired by the world of science that his teachers revealed! In this session, Rod will discuss some world-first research he has led to examine the benefits of muscle stretching and aerobic fitness in prevention of exercise-related injuries, and to investigate the value of novel sock systems and shoe lacing techniques in prevention of foot blisters. He will also explore some of the science involved in current CSU projects designed to improve the health of our inland communities.

Herbert Jelinek is a lecturer at Charles Sturt University and interested in chronic disease prevention and assessment. Chronic diseases such as heart disease and diabetes are increasing especially in rural and remote areas where health care services are sometimes stretched to the limit already. Herbert will be discussing results obtained in research projects dealing with the identification of people at risk of developing chronic disease. His talk will look at biological substances in the blood,  how information technology can come to our aid in identifying people at risk by analysing images from the inside of the eye and how ECG can be used to predict the likelihood of disease occurring.

New facilities at Charles Sturt University, and the recruitment of new staff for veterinary and animal science programmes, have seen exciting developments in horse research in the Riverina. Sharanne Raidal is a horse vet with research interests in equine performance, pharmacology, respiratory disease and foal medicine. In this lecture she will present aspects of equine research and veterinary science currently undertaken at CSU.

These lectures are a great way engage with research that supports classroom teaching. They are especially relevant to the Biology Syllabus (options 9.2 Maintaining a Balance and 9.4 The Search for Better Health) but will include information pertinent to all science teachers.

Meet the Experts will be held from 5-7pm on Tuesday June 24 at the Civic Theatre Wagga Wagga
